Aaron Freeman received the idea for Haines, while making his other series 'Superlonnys'. At the time Freeman came up with it, he was in a depressive state, regarding his speech difficulties and considered becoming a mute altogether. His inspirations came from the characters of 'Mad Max' and Gromit from 'Wallace and Gromit', (Due to viewers understanding them via body language). This gave him the interest in portraying a mute character in a grounded tone.
 
This series reunite Freeman with some of his fellow Superlonnys cast, Ryan Payne (Soayer), Kyle Hollinsworth (SGT Backale), Jamie Carruthers (Hendricks) and Kiefer Adams (Smokey).

The first two episodes (Drone and UnSeen Marksman) were one man productions, since no one else was cast at the time.
